Having travelled extensively, Richard knows from experience that some of the tastiest food comes from local street vendors around the world who are skilled at using simple ingredients to create truly amazing flavours. His exciting new culinary journey will embrace local Hawkes Bay produce, whilst expanding his menu to include a global perspective, featuring sharing plates of internationally-inspired fare.
Napier’s century long history as a bountiful agricultural community provides fantastic fresh sources for his new menu. He uses only the highest quality of local seafood, meats, and produce; enhanced by the use of his own concoction of “secret” herbs and spices. Dishes such as ‘Glazed Chicken wings with torched prawns, chilli & mint’ and ‘Sweet paprika rubbed octopus with fried capers, lemon and coriander’, showcase his talent for taking traditional recipes and interpreting in his own unique style.
“I am excited to take the unlimited array of ingredients I can find in Hawke’s Bay and add the explosive tastes from the streets of the world- ‘eats from the streets’ you might call it!” said Richard. “Some of my favourite flavours are from countries such as Morocco, Spain and Malaysia where the sweet smell of ingredients like paprika, chili, garlic, lemongrass, coriander, sesame and lime envelope you as you walk down the street. Experimenting with new combinations of these has resulted in our exciting new menu items. Whilst working at The French Café and Logan Brown, I was inspired to push the boundaries of flavour combinations whilst still keeping them clean and simple.”
Beginning May 29, The Old Church Restaurant and Bar brings the flavours and passion for great street eats to Hawke's Bay with tasty shared plates starting at $12.50. These new and exciting dishes sit alongside his more traditional a la carte menu.
